Giving Something back to our school, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan

Recently I was scouting for a school for my nephew Manann.

Like everyone else, I wanted him to have the best school possible.

This made me wonder what does a good school comprise of.

During my school days, I had a million complains about BGKV.

There is no rotary club?

We never participate in any inter school event.

Our sports department is horrible. We could not even win a match be it cricket/ football/ basketball or any other game.

Etc etc. (This I am talking about 2000 batch. I hope things have changed not).

In short, I did not like my school much.

but after 10 years of leaving school (and Kolkata) if someone asks me … I would say ….. I love my school.

What made this change of heart??

School is what molds you. I believe whatever I am is because of my school.

If there is something good in me….. it is because of what I learned during my school days. Similarly if there are some drawbacks, it is because of them.

Life has been good and sitting back and thinking about the school is amazing. A series of small but very significant events which left a mark on me (and quite literally).

I have taken a lot from my school and I think its time I give a little something back to my school.

I would like to start of a society in the name of the school.

Purpose of the society

1. The school alumni is amongst the most important networking place. While going for higher education like engg … I searched who from my school is or was in a particular collage etcs. So I propose we host and manage a website for maintaining the whereabouts of ex alumni and a discussion forum to discuss about the same.

2. The best thing I like about my school was that it was green. There were a lot of trees around. Used to love sitting under them. The first purpose of this society will be to plant minimum one tree a year on the school premises. This could be done on a chosen date, or on a common date like independence day, teachers day etc. I assume the cost of a tree would be around Rs. 1,000/- MAX. this would be collected through charity.

3. I believe that right of education is a must. Every1 has the right to education. I would like to support one child/ batch. I assume the fees structure is somewhere around Rs. 25,000/year. So for 12 classes, it should be Rs. 25k*12 = Rs. 3,00,000/-. This would be collected via charity.

The society would consist of a board comprising of minimum 7 members. There would be posts like

· President

· Finance manger

· Media manager (for website related events)

· Etcs

The society has to be registered with the Registrar of Societies.

Next an account has to be opened in the name of the society. This will have 1 or 2 signing authority.

The charity would be collected on a non-compulsion true charity nature. For the amount given as charity some tax benefit would be availed for the same.

Also for a society IT return has to be filed, for which we would either hire an accountant, or one of the alumni could take up the job.

Each board member would draw of salary of Rs. 1/year, because I believe that nothing is for free. J

Please pore in your suggestions.
